The Melbourne Cup at the Studio Report by John Mangan (Photos by Ray Stolz)
Attendance at “Melbourne Cup at The Studio” was dominated by the fashion conscious ladies who came prepared for the “Fashions on (0ff) The Field. The costumes were resplendent in their colour and style, and would have been competitive on the lawns at Flemington.
The “fashionista” judge Joanne Caruso, had a difficult task in selecting the winner after the ladies parade, but all agreed with her decision to select new member Anne Cleary as a worthy winner. Joanne also judged the best millinery, worn in male and female categories.
Judy Stolz with her My Fair Lady selection, was the winner, (we suspect the hat may have come from The Spotlighters costume department), while Leo (Dapper Dan) Mioni won the male division.
The Melbourne Cup sweep was won by Jan Mangan while John Mangan kept it in the family with the prize for the last horse to finish.
The special event the “Novelty E.P.R Cup”, was won by Peter Booth, even though he was penalised for interfering with one of the fillies at the start. Peter was awarded the Cup and vowed to come back next year to defend the title, provided that the event classification of “Novelty” be changed to something more salubrious, perhaps “Stallion of the Year” title. Peter received a bottle of 2003 vintage red, which was found in Leo’s chook shed. Peter will give us a report on it’s quality after his next wine tasting!!
